Techno Music Pioneer Kevin Saunderson Owes Taxes
Widely known as one of the pioneers who popularized techno music, Kevin Saunderson is in debt by more than $181,000 to the IRS. Saunderson, who is also a DJ, was a past producer of the Memorial Day Techno Music festival, an annual even in Detroit.
Saunderson, who hails from Brooklyn, moved to Detroit when he was 9 years old where he met and became friends with Derrick May and Juan Atkins in Belleville High. His two friends launched their music careers earlier than Saunderson who spent some time playing football at Eastern Michigan University. Later on, Saunderson teamed up with his two friends and together they became known as the pioneers of techno music.
Saunderson, 46, gained popularity locally and overseas where he will be giving performances in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Rome and Amsterdam this month.
On August 3, the IRS filed a $72,957 lien at the Wayne County Register of Deeds against Saunderson’s company KMS Productions LLC. Earlier, the IRS also filed two other liens. One was for $19,964 filed on May 28, 2008 at the Oakland County Register of Deeds against Saunderson personally and the other was for $88,080 on May 30, 2006 also against Saunderson in his personal capacity in Oakland county.
According to Saunderson, also known as ‘The Elevator’ to his fans, the $88,080 debt has already been paid off and should not be in his records. He is paying off the $19,964 debt while the $72,947 debt is being disputed. The debt comes from a previous festival that Saunderson produced in Detroit in 2005.
