Double Trouble
It appears that rapper MC Hammer is in hot soup with the IRS. The federal agency claims that the star owes more than $600,000 in tax money. The news channel WYTV reports that the authorities have slapped three liens of $32,926 in May, $12,464 in June (by the state of California) and a whopping $625,792 in July on the entertainer. Hammer, whose real name is Stanley Burrell, said that the IRS is claiming taxes on what he owed them 15 years ago and the amount is not related to his present earnings and business interests. As such, he is contesting the accuracy of the figures with the IRS. The rapper's appeal is undergoing due process.
In 1996, Hammer surprisingly declared himself bankrupt despite the millions of dollars he earned as a famous rapper in the 90's. Hammer's present day businesses include Dance Jam which is a community of dance fans at dancejam.com, his own record label, a production company and other business enterprises. Most recently, he started a reality show called 'Hammertime' in an effort to jumpstart his career and launch into something new. The show is currently aired on the A&E television network. His popularity does not seem to be waning, though as he still has many fans, notably 1.2 million followers on Twitter, the micro-blogging platform.
In the midst of all his business activities, the star claims that the IRS is in error in its assessment of the taxes he owes. He categorically states that they have already taken what was due to them out of some $7 million he had some time ago. Hence, according to Hammer, the present IRS claim that dates back 15 years is a mistake.
In the meantime, one of Hammer's relatives is in a different sort of trouble with the law. The rapper's cousin Marvin Gran was brought before a court last Monday August 10th to answer charges of the alleged rape of a woman he met on Twitter. According to the police, Gran communicated with the woman on Twitter, exchanged emails and had phone conversations with her before arranging to meet in a hotel on July 28th. According to the woman, at the hotel Gran tried to make an advance on her without her consent and when she resisted, he forced himself on her and raped her.
Gran asked for a public defender to be assigned to his case.
