Irs.gov and You

Whether you are net savvy or not, whether you spend hours surfing the Internet or you only check your email, it will pay if you visit the IRS website. If you do not know the URL, it is www.irs.gov. So what's the big deal about visiting the website? There are a few advantages and certain things you can do there, so let me explain them.

Firstly, you can save money. This is because by visiting the website, you can discover the various tax deductions you are eligible for. After all, why pay more taxes than required? Furthermore, with the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, there are probably some new tax breaks you might not be aware of. Another form of savings is donating to an approved charity. If you wish to make a donation to any particular charity, first check Publication 78 in the website to find out if the charity is listed as an approved charity exempted from federal taxation. Then you can calculate how much of your donation can be used deducted from your taxes.

Secondly, you can ensure you have the correct amount of money withheld under your W-4 withholding allowances. Taxes withheld from your salary can be calculated using the IRS Withholding calculator feature in the website.

Thirdly, whatever forms you require can be downloaded and printed out from the website itself. This sure beats having to go to the IRS office to get forms by hand.

Fourthly, if you need a job, look up www.irs.gov for job openings with the IRS! Most of the time, they have both full-time and part-time positions available.

If you operate your own business, the IRS has a special section in its website for you at www.irs.gov/smallbiz. In this small business section of the IRS website, you can find all sorts of information about business which is applicable to you such as business types, business expenses and employees. You can also file your taxes using the business e-filing feature and pay your taxes using the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS).

In the small business section, you will also find some helpful resources such as an informative video of a small business tax workshop, a tax calendar and a small business resource guide. There is even a small business subscription newsletter available. If you subscribe, you will receive reminders and tips to help you in complying with your tax requirements, be kept up-to-date with IRS developments and announcements and be the first to know about what is new on the IRS Small Business section.

So whether you are employed in a job or self-employed running your own business, it pays to log on to www.irs.gov.
