In Nevada, more than 2,300 non-profit organizations of all kinds lost their tax-exempt status. Among those whose status was revoked by the IRS were the Edgewood Tahoe Mens Club, the Lovelock Alfalfa Seed Growers and many more. In fact, most of the organizations lost their status in 2010 but their revocations were posted by the IRS just last year. This was part of a wider nation-wide action that saw more than 275,000 non-profits lose their tax-exempt privileges because of non-compliance with annual tax filings last year.

Florida residents beware! Law enforcement officers have noted an extremely high increase in tax fraud in the Tampa Bay area. Postal officials have intercepted hundreds of millions of dollars of suspected fraudulent tax refunds. Many residents have expressed their dissatisfaction with the efforts put in by the IRS to combat the scourge. In the meantime, lawmakers in Washington have introduced legislation and convened hearings to find ways to overcome the menace.

Miami County has paid $8,489 in taxes and late payment charges to the IRS over the last two years but these payments were not known to the state councilors. And they may have not been done in compliance with state guidelines. This was revealed by Councilman Jan Kendall, who was dismayed that the council had not been informed of the payment of penalties and interest.

According to an audit conducted by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), several hundred prisoners have registered themselves to become licensed tax preparers. Among the thousands of newly appointed tax preparers who obtained their active or provisional Tax Preparer Identification Numbers (TPIN) were 331 prisoners who were still serving time behind bars. 43 of these were under life sentences. None of them disclosed their felony offences in their application, the TIGTA said.
